Countries 2 and 3: Germany and Denmark and Sailing in a Viking Ship!

We got the car on Monday - yay! It's really nice to have a car we know so well when driving over here. It feels a little bit like Home 1.0.

We are on day 2 of the road trip. Yesterday was 7.5 hours of driving - mostly through Germany and a bit of Denmark. Here's us passing into Germany.

I've been sitting in the back seat since Alex gets car sick. That's why you can see Alex's head. :-). Mike definitely enjoyed the parts where there were no speed limits. As you can imagine, we made VERY good time through Germany. And here is our first site of Denmark.

Today we went to a viking museum in Rokskilde. Alex did the research for this. Apparently he went on Chat GPT and told it about our trip and asked what interesting viking spots we should visit. It recommended this museum. So far, Chat GPT did a good job. It was an amazing museum. They found 5 viking ships sunk in the fjord and spent years excavating them.

Now they do something I've never heard of before: "experimental archeology" where they use what they've found in the excavations to remake the ships as close to the originals as possible. Through this method they are able to learn more about the civilizations since they find out good/bad things to do when building the ships. This is part of one of the ships they have excavated.

In addition to the museum, you can do a trip out onto the fjord on one of the reconstructed ships. Alex got to steer and Mike worked the rigging. And we all had to row a bunch since there was almost no wind. The other people on our boat was a student group from France. For some reason they had a very hard time coordinating their oars. It was quite funny. It rained on us a little, but apparently that made the experience more "authentic".

And here's the boat we went on.

After the viking museum we drove to Copenhagen. We're doing a food walking tour tomorrow and I'm sure we'll spend some time seeing the sites as well. As they say in Denmark, "Farvel!" (Goodbye!)

Have car will travel. Nice road trip through 2 different countries. Travoli Gardens was a nice place to spend the afternoon in Copenhagen when we were there. Also the under ocean tunnel over to Sweden was very memorable. Watch out for the walking paths, we almost got ran over before realizing bikes were the right of way speeding by.

It must be so strange to drive on the other side of the road over there, especially with your steering wheel on the left side. Safe travels kids.

I can see the grin on Mike's fast driving fast on the highways ;) And no radar detector needed.

It will be interesting with all the exercise you get there if you find you can do more walking food tours without "paying the price" physically.
